Our Story

our story

Losing a brother to suicide inspired a vision in Kev to help people feel valued and heard.

Declan Curran. 7th July 1981 - 6th June 1995

When he was just 15 Inspired Youth CEO Kev Curran lost his 13-year-old brother to suicide. The impact and shock of Declan’s death shook the whole community. Feeling confused, angry and hopeless, Kev started to self-destruct, his mental health deteriorated, and he was not turning up for lessons on his Media Studies course at York College. Aged 17 Kev tried to take his own life, fortunately he was found and rushed to hospital.

That traumatic moment led to a life changing conversation with his tutor Alison Willis. Through her support and encouragement Kev restarted his course, passed with Distinctions and Merits, sat 2 A Levels in a year and later went to university to study film and media where he achieved a first-class Degree with Honours. Kev’s first film Inner Sense which he dedicated to his brother Declan won a Royal Television Society award and was highly commended by Turner Classic Shorts film festival judged by the likes of Evan McGregor and Ridley Scott.

Seeing the power and impact that one person can have on another Kev was inspired and started to dream about making films and telling stories so that unheard voices could be shared, and their stories could inspire others. After several years making films as an independent filmmaker, Inspired Youth was established in 2007 with the aim of raising aspirations and making a lasting social impact. Almost two decades later we have worked with thousands of people, hundreds of organisations and produced a range of hard hitting films media and campaigns that make a social impact.
