Care Leaver ‘movement’ makes profound impact with the 1% at Everyman Cinema

19-10-2018

Care Leavers left hearts and minds deeply touched as the impact of their experience driven film screened on the largest Everyman Cinema screen in the UK this October 2018 as part of the first ever York Mediale, the first international digital arts festival to be hosted in York.

A full house of supporters, local politicians, policy makers, professionals and youth organisations graced Screen1 of the Cinema to witness the incredibly powerful voices of care experienced young people. Their film explores the journey from care to independence through a character they created through creative workshops with Inspired Youth.

The atmosphere was absolutely incredible and the audience were left stunned by the power of the young peoples story telling. The film raises awareness about the issues facing care experienced young people setting out on their journey into independence and highlighted the Childrens Society campaign to exempt care leavers from paying council tax to give them a fairer start in life.  The night was packed with incredible moments, laughter, tears and an emotive and inspiring Q&A with the amazing young women behind the production.

Inspired Youth’s Director and award winning filmmaker Kev Curran and York based Hip Hop artist Kritikal Powers brought together a group of young people from the city, to create spoken word performances on film, bringing their personal experiences to life through the creation of digital media story telling representing a shared experience of the group.
